Robert J. Niedrach papers 1902-1990,

The collection, contained in one 2.5 x 15.5 x 10-inch box and one 5 x 15.5 x 10-inch box, contains the papers of Robert J. Niedrach, co-author of Birds of Colorado and, at various times from the 1920s to the 1970s, preparator of ornithology, Curator of Ornithology and Assistant Director of the Denver Museum of Natural History (now the Denver Museum of Nature & Science). The smaller box contains 47 files covering the years 1922 to 1970. They include correspondence with government officials and with officials at the Denver museum and other museums; correspondence with officials at Denver schools and other area people covering, among other subjects, species identification; typewritten instructions on preparing bird skins for scientific purposes; and exhibit plans. The files also contain information on bird sightings; bird lists; habitat exhibits, including the "Urban Wildlife" exhibit; field notes; specimen data; budget information; and other department records. The larger box holds four bound notebooks containing handwritten notes taken by Margaret Elizabeth Pritchett in an ornithology class taught by Niedrach in 1933 and 1934. One of the notebooks also contains a handwritten index of birds covered. The index is dated 1943.

Most of these records were transferred to the Archives from the Building Maintenance Department, although some later records come from the Exhibits Department. Robert J. Niedrach served the Colorado Museum of Natural History for more than 50 years between 1913 and 1970, rising from taxidermist to Assistant Director. He participated in all phases of Museum activities and played an important role in developing ecological dioramas of Colorado and many parts of the world that brought the Museum recognition as one of the leading natural history institutions in the United States.
